ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation Syed Faisal Niaz Tirmizi has disclosed that Islamabad and Moscow are steadily expanding cooperation across energy trade defence and regional security marking a new phase of strategic convergence between the two nations.

This revelation came during an exclusive interview with Mudassar Iqbal of the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan underscoring the growing momentum in bilateral ties.

Ambassador Tirmizi confirmed that Pakistan warmly anticipates a visit from Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future further elevating high-level engagement.

On the economic front both countries are intensifying collaboration in the energy sector described as a cornerstone of their partnership.

Pakistan and Russia have shifted bilateral trade to alternative currencies including the Russian ruble and Chinese yuan eliminating reliance on US dollars amid international financial constraints.

Such mechanisms have already streamlined transactions and reduced exposure to global volatility with Russia and China now settling over 99 percent of their own trade in local currencies as a model.

Ambassador Tirmizi expressed Pakistan’s keen interest in joining BRICS viewing the bloc as a dynamic platform reshaping the global economic order.

He voiced hope for stronger international backing to facilitate Pakistan’s inclusion in this influential grouping of emerging economies.

Relations between Pakistan and Russia have witnessed remarkable growth in recent years spanning energy defence economic cooperation and shared regional security objectives.

In the security domain the two nations collaborate actively on counter-terrorism initiatives as members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure.

This partnership within RATS enhances intelligence sharing and joint operational strategies against common threats.

Ambassador Tirmizi announced that joint military exercises between Pakistani and Russian forces are scheduled to take place in Pakistan in September this year.

These drills will build on the successful Druzhba series which focus on counter-terrorism tactics including drone warfare urban combat and countering improvised explosive devices.

The exercises underscore the Pakistan Armed Forces’ dedication to refining professional excellence and interoperability with international partners.

Such training directly strengthens Pakistan’s defence capabilities in addressing evolving security challenges.

Energy cooperation remains a vital pillar with Pakistan pursuing long-term contracts for Russian oil supplies following initial imports that began in 2023.

Discussions now cover exploration production refining and potential refinery upgrades offering Pakistan diversified and cost-effective energy solutions.

These developments come as Pakistan seeks to import up to 3.6 million tonnes of Russian crude annually subject to logistical refinements.

The ambassador reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to broadening this multifaceted partnership aimed at fostering regional stability and mutual economic prosperity.

Analysts note that the shift to alternative currencies and deeper energy ties could save Pakistan significant foreign exchange while bolstering resilience against external pressures.

The growing defence collaboration through exercises and SCO frameworks further positions Pakistan as a key player in regional counter-terrorism efforts.

Overall this strategic convergence reflects Islamabad’s proactive foreign policy in cultivating reliable partnerships that advance national development and security goals.

As global dynamics evolve Pakistan-Russia relations stand poised for even greater achievements in the years ahead.
