ISLAMABAD:  Security forces conducted a successful intelligence-based operation (IBO) in North Waziristan district, eliminating eight Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, including an Afghan national.

A significant cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered from the site during the raid, officials confirmed. The operation targeted a militant hideout based on credible intelligence.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the militants were involved in planning attacks against security forces and civilians in the region. No casualties were reported among the troops.

The raid took place in a sensitive area of North Waziristan, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. North Waziristan has remained a focus of counter-terrorism efforts due to its terrain and proximity to the border.

Security sources described the operation as part of ongoing efforts under broader initiatives like Operation Azm-e-Istehkam to dismantle militant networks. The presence of an Afghan national among the killed highlights cross-border movement of fighters.

Weapons recovered included automatic rifles, ammunition, and other tactical equipment. Officials said the cache was intended for use in future attacks in the tribal districts.

TTP has maintained activity in North and South Waziristan despite sustained military pressure. Recent operations in the area have resulted in the neutralisation of dozens of militants in similar IBOs over recent months.

In February 2025 alone, security forces conducted multiple IBOs in North Waziristan, killing several TTP operatives in areas including Dosali and Tappi. Larger clearance actions have also been reported in Shewa and Datta Khel.

The Afghan national’s involvement aligns with reports of increased cross-border militant mobility between Pakistan and Afghanistan. TTP has used sanctuaries across the border to regroup and launch operations.

Local residents in North Waziristan have previously expressed support for security operations that restore stability and curb extortion and targeted killings by militants. The region continues to witness efforts to strengthen writ of the state following the merger of tribal districts.

Military analysts note that such precise IBOs minimise collateral damage while disrupting command structures. Recovery of arms caches prevents their use in urban or highway attacks further south.

The operation comes amid persistent security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Data from monitoring groups indicates TTP remains the most active militant outfit targeting security personnel in the province, particularly in the tribal districts.

Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns with Afghan authorities over the presence of TTP elements on Afghan soil. Cross-border dynamics continue to influence the pace of counter-terrorism efforts.

In the broader context, these operations form part of a sustained campaign to prevent resurgence of large-scale militancy seen in previous years. Forces maintain high vigilance along the border and in cleared areas.

Further intelligence-based actions are expected in the coming weeks as security agencies track remaining networks. Officials emphasised that no compromise will be made on eliminating threats to national security.

The successful raid and arms recovery underscore the military’s ongoing commitment to stability in the northwest. Developments in the area will be closely monitored for their impact on regional security.
