(Powerful Bomb Blast in Pakistan Claims Multiple Lives including Police Officials)

ISLAMABAD: At least nine people, including two traffic police personnel, were martyred and over two dozen injured after a powerful explosion rocked a crowded market in Sarai Naurang tehsil of Lakki Marwat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday.
The blast occurred during rush hour in Naurang Bazaar. Police officials said the explosion involved an improvised explosive device rigged to a loader rickshaw.
Lakki Marwat District Police Officer confirmed that nine people lost their lives while 23 others sustained injuries. Rescue 1122 teams shifted the dead and injured to Naurang Hospital, where emergency was declared and several victims remain in critical condition.
The explosion caused significant damage to nearby shops and vehicles. Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast that was heard across the area, triggering panic in the busy market.
Bomb Disposal Squad experts reached the site and launched an investigation. Officials are examining whether the device was remotely detonated or involved a suicide bomber. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the Inspector General of Police. He directed authorities to provide full medical support to the injured and compensation to families of the deceased.
This attack comes days after a major suicide vehicle-borne IED assault on a police post in nearby Bannu district on May 9, which resulted in 15 police personnel martyred.
Lakki Marwat and surrounding districts in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have seen repeated militant incidents. Security forces have conducted multiple operations against Fitna al-Khawarij networks linked to TTP elements operating from across the Afghan border.
According to security data, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed over 400 terrorism-related incidents in 2025, resulting in more than 600 casualties among security personnel and civilians. The province shares a porous border with Afghanistan spanning hundreds of kilometres.
The latest blast targeted a civilian-heavy area near routine police presence. Traffic police personnel appear to have been among the primary victims in the crowded bazaar setting.
Interior Ministry sources stated that investigations are focusing on local and cross-border linkages. Intelligence agencies are analysing technical evidence from the site to trace the perpetrators.
Local residents expressed concern over recurring violence affecting daily commerce and movement in the region. Markets in Lakki Marwat have previously faced security threats, disrupting economic activity in this agriculture and trade-dependent district.
Provincial authorities have increased security checks across major towns in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the incident. Additional forces have been deployed to sensitive locations to prevent follow-up attacks.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in counter-terrorism efforts despite large-scale military operations and border fencing initiatives. Pakistan has repeatedly raised the issue of terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan with the Kabul administration.
