ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s resolution reaffirming the right toself-determination for peoples who are subjected to the colonial, foreignand alien occupation was unanimously passed by the committee of the UnitedNations’ General Assembly.
Co-sponsored by 81 countries, the resolution serves to focus the world’sattention on the struggle by peoples for their inalienable right toself-determination, including those in Kashmir and Palestine. Presentingthe draft, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Munir Akramhighlighted the importance of the right to self-determination that enjoysprimacy in international law.
The briefing was made in a reference to India’s annexation of occupiedJammu and Kashmir on August 5 when the valley was placed under a continuousrepressive lockdown with internet and phone communications cutoff. Akramsaid curfew and blackout, the lockdown of the civilian population, tosuppress their ability to express their demand for freedom andself-determination is obviously a gross violation of human rights.
As part of a silent protest against this move and India’s occupation,people in the Valley have been staying away from businesses, educationalinstitutions, and offices.
Public transport is also off the roads to a large extent.
