Indian diplomat alleged to be involved in a hitman hire to kill Sikh Leader

ISLAMABAD: The United States-based Sikh advocacy group Sikhs For Justice(SFJ) has accused an Indian diplomat posted in Canada of attempting to hirea hitman to assassinate Inderjeet Singh Gosal, a prominent organiser of theKhalistan Referendum campaign. According to SFJ leader Gurpatwant SinghPannun, the diplomat allegedly offered $50,000 in cash to eliminate Gosal, who coordinates referendum voting in British Columbia.

The group claims the plot mirrors intelligence warnings that surfaced weeksbefore the June 2023 murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar inSurrey. SFJ says it shared detailed information about the allegedconspiracy with Canadian intelligence and law enforcement agencies severalmonths ago. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has reportedly offeredGosal entry into its witness protection programme following crediblethreats to his life.

Pannun stated that multiple Canadian security agencies, including the RCMP,have reviewed the intelligence and briefed senior government offices, including those of Prime Minister Mark Carney, Foreign Minister AnitaAnand, and the Minister of Public Safety. Despite the gravity of theallegations, Ottawa has yet to issue any public statement on the matter orsummon the accused diplomat.

SFJ alleges the attempted contract killing reflects New Delhi’s continuingpolicy of targeting pro-Khalistan activists abroad with complete impunity.Pannun directly blamed Prime Minister Carney’s decision to resume tradetalks with Narendra Modi without demanding accountability for previouskillings, saying it has emboldened Indian agencies to plan freshassassinations on Canadian soil.

The revelation comes amid already strained India-Canada ties following lastyear’s public accusation by Ottawa that Indian agents were involved inNijjar’s murder, an allegation India dismissed as absurd. Sikh groupsmaintain that at least four activists have been killed or targeted inCanada, the United States, Britain, and Pakistan since 2020 in operationslinked to Indian intelligence.

SFJ has urged its supporters to monitor public appearances by Indian HighCommissioner Dinesh Patnaik in Canada and called on Ottawa to immediatelyexpel diplomats implicated in the plot. No response has been received fromthe Indian High Commission in Ottawa or the Ministry of External Affairs inNew Delhi at the time of filing this report.
