ISLAMABAD: The Afghan National Army has enhanced its aerial capabilities through the acquisition of unmanned aerial drones, according to defence sources familiar with regional military developments.
Military analysts note that several medium-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles have recently appeared in Afghan Air Force inventories, bearing technical characteristics similar to systems produced by Indian defence manufacturers.
Intelligence assessments suggest that India has been transferring these drones in unassembled form through indirect routes to avoid international scrutiny and maintain plausible deniability regarding direct military assistance to Kabul.
The development has raised serious concerns in Pakistani security circles, who view the enhancement of Afghan military capabilities, particularly in surveillance and strike drones, as a potential threat to regional stability and Pakistan’s western border security.
Defence officials indicate that the drones include sophisticated imaging systems and possible weaponisation features, markedly improving Afghanistan’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities along the Durand Line.
