Dare not hang death row Taliban prisoners, Afghan Taliban warn government

KABUL – Afghan government is mulling option of possible execution of theTaliban inmates, CEO Abdullah Abdullah said the orders will be executed incertain cases.

However, he did not elaborate further in this regard and it is yet notclear how many Taliban inmates are currently serving in the jails and howmany of them have been sentenced to death.

This comes as the Taliban group claimed Monday that the Afghan governmentis mulling to execute a number of prisoners belonging to the Taliban groupin Kabul’s Pul-e-Charkhi prison.

Taliban group spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid in a statement said the Afghanauthorities have started shifting several prisoners in Pul-e-Charkhi sinceSunday.

Mujahid further added that the information received by the group suggeststhat the government is planning to carry out execution of the prisonershaving links with the Taliban.

He warned that the execution of the political inmates and Talibanaffiliates will have negative consequences and that the government andjudicial institutions of the government will be responsible.

Mujahid also claimed that the government and its judicial institutions haveno legitimacy and the capabilities to carry out executions on Talibanaffiliates.

He also called on international rights organizations to intervene andprevent the Afghan government and the United States from the execution ofthe prisoners.

In the meantime, reports indicate that around 750 prisoners serving in thejails in Afghanistan have been sentenced to death but the execution ordersof the Taliban inmates have not been signed by President Mohammad AshrafGhani.
