Turkey US soldiers on collision course in Syria

ANKARA – Turkey has warned that American soldiers risk being targeted innorthwestern Syria as the Turkish military pushes ahead with its offensiveagainst Kurdish militants supported by the United States in the Arabcountry.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag told CNN-Turk on Sunday thatAmerican soldiers risked being caught up in clashes if they appeared inuniforms of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). “If they come upagainst us in such a uniform we will see them as… terrorists.”

“But the US has to be aware of Turkey’s sensitivities. If US soldiers wearterrorist uniforms or are among the terrorists in the event of an attackagainst the army, then there is not going to be the chance to make adistinction.”

Bozdag, however, said Turkey wanted no confrontation with American troops.”We do not at all want any clash with the US in Manbij, east of theEuphrates or in any other place.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Turkish premier threatened that Ankara wouldexpand its operation against the YPG militia to Manbij and even east of theEuphrates.A convoy of American military vehicles patrols the roads surrounding thenorthern Syrian city of Manbij, March 3, 2017. (Photo by AFP)

“If they (the YPG) do not withdraw from Manbij, then we will go to Manbij,we will go east of the Euphrates.”

Pro-government Turkish media said the tank attack was carried out with ananti-tank missile given to the YPG by the US.

Yeni Akit, a Turkish newspaper, in a reference to past images of Americantroops in northern Syria showing them with the YPG militia, said that “thesupposed ally the United States knows no limit in treachery.”

Turkey launched the so-called Operation Olive Branch in Syria’s Afrin onJanuary 20 in a bid to eliminate the YPG, which Ankara views as a terrororganization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party(PKK).A Turkish soldier guards a position on Mount Bersaya, north of the Syriantown of Azaz near the border with Turkey, January 29, 2018. American troops have no presence in and around Afrin but they are presentin Manbij and east of the Euphrates, where they have purportedly assistedthe YPG in the fight against the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.

Operation Olive Branch in Afrin is Turkey’s second major militaryintervention in Syria since early 2011.

In August 2016, Turkey began a unilateral military intervention in northernSyria, code-named Operation Euphrates Shield, sending tanks and warplanesacross the border. Ankara claimed that its campaign was aimed at pushingDaesh from Turkey’s border with Syria and stopping the advance of Kurdishforces, who were themselves fighting Daesh.

Turkey ended its campaign in northern Syria in March 2017, but at the timedid not rule out the possibility of yet another act of military offensiveinside the Arab country.
