NEW DELHI – Indian Congress leader Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, a formerhome minister of the state stunned everybody by bringing the grenade to thestate assembly.
He created a big flutter in the Kerala assembly on Wednesday when he pulledout a dud stun grenade while criticising police action on Youth Congressactivists in the state capital last week, Indian media has reported.
He claimed the police used powerful stun grenades on party workers who wereprotesting against the murder of Youth Congress activist Shuhaib who washacked to death allegedly by a group of CPI(M) workers in the trouble-torndistric of Kannur in North Kerala last month. Taking out the grenade from acover, he said “police raj” was prevalent in the state.
When ruling legislators protested vehemently, the Congress leader said hebrought the grenade, which he said was past its expiry date, the house toshow its intensity.
Later he handed over the grenade to security personnel.. Ruling MLAs soughtaction against the legislator and the Speaker later assured them that hewould look into it.
He said rules did not permit members to carry either explosives or weaponsto the House. Later Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also said the memberflouted all norms of the House.
This is not the first time such a case is being reported from the KeralaAssembly.
In 2012, CPI(M) legislator EP Jayarajan had brought two used tear gasgrenades to the House to show “police atrocities”. against the partycadres. Interestingly, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan was the home ministerthen.
