16 Indian girls raped in shelter home: Report

MUMBAI – Medical report of 21 Indian girls who were rescued from a shelterhome for girls in Muzaffarpur in May this year has confirmed that 16 ofthem were subjected to rape, some aged just 7 years during their staythere. The medical examination of all the girls were conducted at the PatnaMedical College and Hospital. The hospital administration has sent thereport to the Muzaffarpur Police.

“We have received medical reports from Patna today of 21 girls out of whichit has been said that 16 of them had sexual contact. We are awaiting forthe report of 8 more girls. We are going to file chargesheet against theaccused who have been arrested till now,” said Harpreet Kaur, SSPMuzaffarpur.The shelter home where the girls were being raped

The entire matter of the girls being physically abused at the Sewa SankalpEvam Vikas Samiti, a shelter home run by Brajesh Thakur and Vineet Kumarcame to light in May when a social audit was conducted by Tata Institute ofSocial Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. TISS submitted a 100-page detailed socialaudit report to the state government following which the crack down on theshelter home took place.

An FIR was lodged in this case after which Thakur, who owns the shelterhome along with Kumar, member of child welfare committee along with sevenother female staffs working there were arrested. During the preliminaryinvestigation, the police has found that the girls staying at the shelterhome were not only sexually violated by Brajesh and Vineet but also takenoutside for various occasion. Police had confirmed that many outsiders alsoused to frequently visit the shelter homes indicating that the girls werepushed into flesh trade.

The girls who were rescued were sent for medical examination to Patna, thereport of which has now come.

According to the medical team which examined the girls, the mentalcondition of the girls was bad.
