India sccumbs to US Pressure over fear of backlash

NEW DELHI – Fearing backlash and retaliation from the US authorities, Indiaas postponed for the fourth time the custom duties on US products coming toIndia.

Earlier President Trump on March 9 had imposed duties on Indian steelproducts and other items.

India for the fourth time deferred the deadline to impose retaliatorycustoms duties on 29 US products, including almond, walnut and pulses, byanother 45 days, the government has said.

According to a notification by the finance ministry, the implementation ofthe duty hike has been postponed until January 31, 2019.

The commerce ministry had asked its finance counterpart to extend thedeadline further.

In June, India decided to impose retaliatory tariffs from August 4. But itwas extended by 45 days till September 18 and then till November 2. InNovember, the decision to impose these duties was deferred till December 17.
