CPEC Industrial Zones: Federal government takes important decisions

ISLAMABAD – Board of Investment (BoI) and the National Development & ReformCommission’s (NDRC) have agreed to advance industrial cooperation underCPEC. Pakistan will employ Chinese experience to expedite the developmentof special economic zones. The meeting was jointly chaired by Secretary BoIOmer Rasul and Deputy Director-General of NDRC, China. Secretary BoIupdated the NDRC delegation about the measures taken by Pakistan toguarantee the early implementation of industrial cooperation. Secretary BoIRasul emphasised on building government to government (G2G) framework tospeed up industrial cooperation under CPEC Phase II’s Business2Businessagenda. NDRC delegation offered to train small and medium enterprises(SMEs) in Pakistan. Such modern and competitive SMEs will boost Pakistan’sexports. Chinese Supply Chain Companies Eager to invest in supply chainbusiness of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have agreed to fast-track the pace ofindustrial cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) byutilising Chinese experience to ensure speedy development of specialeconomic zones (SEZs) in the country.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Board of Investment which wasjointly chaired by BoI Secretary Omer Rasul and Chinese NationalDevelopment and Reform Commission (NDRC) Deputy Director-General Gao Jian.The meeting was attended by officials from BoI and NDRC.

Rasul briefed the NDRC delegation regarding the steps taken by Pakistan toensure early implementation of industrial cooperation. He informed themeeting that under the first phase of CPEC, various energy andinfrastructure projects have begun commercial operations adding that thesecond phase will focus on industrial cooperation as envisioned.

He told the meeting that Rashakai SEZ in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will belaunched in September, whereas two more SEZs including China SpecialEconomic Zone, Dhabeji and Allama Iqbal Industrial City (M3), Faisalabadwould follow similar pattern of development. Moreover, the government hasalerted all the relevant ministries and sufficient funds have already beenallocated to start provision of utilities at the SEZs, he said.

The NDRC delegation appreciated Pakistan’s efforts and said that Chineseinvestors are willing to invest in the SEZs being developed under CPEC.

Deputy Director-General Jian said the industrial cooperation under CPEC canhelp Pakistan develop its industrial cluster based on its potentials. TheChinese side offered to train and equip Pakistan’s small and mediumenterprises (SMEs), making them technologically sound and competitive toincrease country’s exports.

Both sides also discussed the agenda for Joint Working Group on industrialcooperation and forthcoming Joint Cooperation Committee, expected to beheld in October or November this year.
