ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Sunday warnedIndia over stealing Pakistan waters in a veiled reference while hearing acase.
CJP ordered Punjab Irrigation Department to submit a report by January 4 ina case pertaining to alleged water theft by India.
The bench headed by Justice Nisar heard a petition alleging that India hadbeen stealing water from Pakistan via River Ravi and Abbasiya Link Canal.
During the hearing, the chief justice remarked that “we [Pakistan] won’tlet India steal water from Pakistan”.
In addition, the chief justice questioned Punjab Irrigation DepartmentSecretary Ali Murtaza whether the provincial government was aware of thewater theft and what steps had they taken to resolve the issue.
The top judge remarked that water from these channels must be preserved asit is essential for farmers for purposes of irrigation.
He cautioned that whoever tries to steal Pakistan’s water shall bearconsequences. “We shall lodge complaints against those who exploit us,” thechief justice maintained.
