Top Indian diplomat arrives in Afghanistan to offset Afghanistan recent inclination towards Pakistan

KABUL – Haneef Atmar President Ashraf Ghani’s National Security Advisorwelcomed Indian Deputy National Security Advisor Rajinder Khanna to Kabulon Wednesday morning.

Both sides will hold security meetings over the situation in Afghanistan,Atmar’s office confirmed.

“A joint security committee meeting between Afghanistan and India kickedoff. At the outset, the @NSAAtmar has presented information about generalsecurity situation of Afghanistan,” Atmar tweeted.

However, his office did not provide further details about the trip.

Khanna’s trip comes after Atmar, along with an Afghan delegation, visitedPakistan on Monday. Together Kabul and Islamabad vowed to get peace talksback on truck.

Afghan officials said the two countries also agreed to take specific stepsregarding the implementation of the action plan for peace and for reducingthe scale of threats.

High level security officials from Afghanistan and Pakistan held a meetingin Islamabad and agreed to resume efforts for peace negotiations and tospeed up the process of implementing the joint action plan for peace,officials said on Monday.

“High level meetings were held with Pakistan’s national security advisor,army chief, the leadership of Pakistan security institutions, deputyminister of foreign affairs, head of operations, the economic advisor ofPakistan’s prime minister and other high level officials, the meetings wereheld in a cordial and conducive atmosphere,” the NSC said in a statement onMonday.

The Pakistan army also said in a statement that military officials from thetwo countries had agreed to the resumption of peace talks.

“Pakistan and Afghanistan have expressed the resolve to work together tostrengthen bilateral relations and improve the security situation in theregion. This understanding was reached during a meeting between ahigh-level Afghan delegation and National Security Advisor Nasser KhanJanjua,” the Pakistani government said in a statement following the meeting.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to draw up a plan in April followingPakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s trip to Kabul where he heldtalks with Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani.

According to office of the national security advisor, both parties hadunanimous views regarding the importance of peace for both countries.

The two sides also agreed to take joint action against the elements whocontinue to defy peace.

The office of national security advisor added that Pakistan’s army chiefgeneral Qamar Jawed Bajwa would pay an official visit to Kabul in the nextfew days at the invitation of President Ashraf Ghani.
