Imran Khan likely to be barred from elections, hints PM Kakar

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar has underscored that the fateof Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan’s eligibility for electionsremains uncertain. He explained that if the courts ultimately decide tolegally bar Imran Khan from participating in the electoral process afterexhausting all available legal options, it would be beyond the control ofthe caretaker government.

During an interview with BBC HARDtalk while on a visit to London, thecaretaker prime minister emphasized that Imran Khan’s situation is not yetfinal. He pointed out that there are judicial remedies at Imran Khan’sdisposal, and if all these legal avenues are pursued judicially, thereexists the possibility of him being legally disqualified, a decision thatwould rest solely in the hands of the judiciary.

Regarding Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif andPML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister Kakar reiterated that anydisqualification from elections would not result from executive decisionsbut rather from judicial rulings. As caretaker prime minister, he stressedthat he lacks the authority to overturn judicial outcomes.

Responding to questions about Nawaz Sharif’s potential arrest uponreturning from London, he explained that law enforcement agencies wouldneed to consider whether Nawaz Sharif had secured protective bail or hadother legal remedies available to him.

In a separate interview with BBC Urdu, the caretaker prime ministeremphasized that in Nawaz Sharif’s case, the law should follow its coursesince his departure from Pakistan was facilitated by a court order.
