Indian Army General reacts over Pakistan’s nuclear talk

NEW DELHI – The Head of the Eastern Army Command Lieutenant General MMNaravane on Tuesday said that Pakistan could keep raising the ‘nuclearbogey’ but ‘we are not scared’.

Naravane’s comments come in the wake of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khancautioning India in his address to the nation that both the countries arenuclear powers and in case of war, it could have an impact on the entireworld.

Speaking at an event of Bharat Chamber of Commerce here, Narvane said, “Weare ready to face any challenges. Whatever we do it is done keeping in mindlong term goal.” On being asked about China and 1962 conflict with them,Naravane said, “We are no longer the Army of 1962. If China says don’trepeat history, we have to also tell them the same thing.”

“1962 was not a military debacle. It was a political debacle. All Armyunits fought well and did their task,” he said. “I do not see 1962 as ablack mark on the Army and armed forces. We have learnt our lessons andwhat went wrong.

Over the years, we have been trying to bridge that capability gap. It isnot easy to overcome those gaps in a short time frame as we also havebudgetary constraints,” Naravane said.

“We have come a long way and China especially realises that. In fact, Chinawas caught unprepared in the Doklam standoff,” said the head of EasternCommand.
