Federal government disbands PEMRA, Press Council of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Federal government has decided to disband PEMRA and PressCouncil of Pakistan, it has been revealed.

A unified regulatory authority is being established to replace theexisting Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and PressCouncil of Pakistan.

Government has decided to replace PEMRA and Press Council and form asingle, unified authority to oversee print as well as electronic and cybermedia,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has said.

The new regulator, named Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority, will comprisetop officials and representatives from the media industry, the infominister informed.

He said the measure would help save national resources as the newregulatory body would look after electronic, print and social mediasimultaneously.

Speaking about state television, Chaudhry reiterated that his ministry hasended censorship of state media and the state television channel willbroadcast whatever happens in the Parliament.

He said the public’s money will not be used by the government for personaladvertisements. Slamming the rival Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, he said,“PML-N government sustained itself through advertisements.”
