Afghan Police Commander killed by armed gunmen

KABUL – A district police chief has been shot dead by unidentified gunmenin eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Thursday.

Attuallah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan NewsKhewa district police head Lt. Col. Matiullah Khan was gunned down inBadiala area.

He said Khan came under attack while attending a soldier’s funeral onWednesday. The police officer succumbed to his wounds at hospital.

One civilian was also killed and four others were injured in the attack,Khogyani said, adding the wounded were evacuated to hospital. One of theinjured is said to be in critical condition.

Rahmatullah, 60, one of the injured, said the gunmen stormed the funeralceremony from four directions. He had no information about the exact numberof casualties.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
