Pope Francis has arrived on a visit to Myanmar on Monday to meet the country’s leadership.
At the start of the visit, Pope Francis met Myanmar’s Army Chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at Yangon.
The Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Pope and the Army Chief spoke of the great responsibility of the country’s authorities in this moment of transition during the 15-minute meeting. The Pope has previously condemned Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya Muslims.
The Pope Francis will also visit Bangladesh, and meet a small group of Rohingya refugees there in a symbolic gesture.
