The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has recently implemented newdelimitations in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, resulting in areduction of six assembly seats, giving a strong blow to PTI which had wontwo third majority in the KP Assembly.
However, this move by the ECP has ignited a legal dispute, as the JamiatUlema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) has chosen to contest these changes throughlegal means.
In response to the altered delimitations, the JUI-F has taken a decisivestance, asserting that the ECP’s actions have fostered a feeling of neglectand underrepresentation in KP. To combat this perceived injustice, theJUI-F has taken the initiative to assemble a legal team at the provinciallevel, poised to challenge the recently instituted delimitations.
The religio-political party, JUI-F, has publicly declared its intention toengage in a legal battle in an effort to restore the six assembly seatsthat were subtracted from KP. The spokesperson for JUI-F has squarelyplaced blame on the ECP, asserting that its actions have sown uncertaintythroughout the nation.
While articulating its concerns, the JUI-F spokesperson has questioned therationale behind the reduction of assembly seats, particularly in the wakeof a new digital census. It is notable that the spokesperson has criticizedthe ECP for decreasing the number of constituencies, rather thanproportionately increasing them based on population data, as would havebeen expected.
This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape ofKP, as the JUI-F gears up for a legal confrontation with the ElectionCommission of Pakistan, advocating for a restoration of assembly seats anda more equitable representation of the region’s population. The outcome ofthis legal battle will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for theprovince’s political dynamics.
