NEW DELHI – Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday said therecent report on human rights violations in Kashmir, released by the UnitedNations, was ‘motivated’.

Apparently trying to brush aside the serious human rights concerns raisedin the report, the top Indian general tried to downplay the abuses of Indiaforces in occupied territory by shifting blame, and termed some humanrights reports ‘motivated’.

General Rawat did not specify the motivations he was talking about, and didnot provide examples of ‘motivated’ reports by United Nations, which madehis claims even more dubious.

“I don’t think we should get too concerned with these reports. Some ofthese reports [by human rights organisations] are motivated,” General Rawatsaid.

The general refused to speak about the Indian Army’s record of humanrights. “I don’t think we need to speak about the human rights record ofthe Indian Army,” he added.

Earlier this month, the United Nations had released the first-ever reporton human rights violation in Indian Occupied Kashmir and demanded aninternational probe into it, evoking an unusual reaction from India, whichresorted to calling the document ‘fallacious and motivated’.

New Delhi had also lodged a strong protest with the United Nations, sayingthe government is “deeply concerned that individual prejudices are beingallowed to undermine the credibility of a UN institution.”
