ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa attends emergencymeeting in Prime Minister Office.
Prime Minister Imran Khan is chairing an emergency meeting of seniormembers of the federal cabinet to deliberate upon the proceedings ofSupreme Court in connection with extension in tenure of Chief of Army Staff(COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
The army chief is also attending the meeting being held at the PM Office onWednesday, sources told *Express News*.
The government’s legal team is briefing the prime minister and his cabinetover objections raised by the apex court during today’s hearing.
The high-level meeting is called to consult on amendments made in rules ofthe Army Act, sources said. Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaderand the representatives of the law ministry Babar Awan is also present,they added.
In a rare move, the top court on Tuesday had suspended until today agovernment notification of reappointment of General Qamar, who was due toretire on November 29, for another three-year term.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on November21, the notification for General Qamar’s reappointment was issued on August19, which said that he would continue to serve as the COAS until November2022.
