ISLAMABAD – Pakistan approaches UN Secretary General and President UNSecurity Council over Occupied Kashmir case.
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has addressed a letter to the UNSecretary General and the President of the UN Security Council outliningPakistan’s legal case on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
The letter, along with detailed factsheet and comprehensive annexures,highlights the illegal, unilateral, coercive Indian actions of 5th August2019 which aim at bringing about a demographic change in Indian occupiedJammu & Kashmir. These actions are intended to alter the Muslim majority ofthe state to a minority, with a view to preempt the UN administeredPlebiscite envisaged under numerous Security Council Resolutions toascertain the wishes of the Kashmiris to join Pakistan or India.
The Foreign Minister’s letter not only builds on Pakistan’s efforts tosensitize the international community about the continuing Indianatrocities in Occupied Kashmir, but also presents Pakistan’s comprehensiveposition on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, including the relevant UNSecurity Council resolutions, bilateral agreements and relevant letters tothe UN in a sequential manner, laying out the international law andPakistan’s legal case on Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that not only are the Indian actions instark violation of its international commitments, but they also contravenethe numerous bilateral commitments, including the Simla Agreement, LahoreDeclaration (1999), Islamabad Declaration (2004), Joint Statement of theNational Security Advisers and Foreign Secretaries of both countries(December 2015) and Pakistan-India Joint Statement (December 2015), whichclearly accept the disputed status of Occupied Kashmir and reaffirm thecommitment of peaceful resolution of the same.
In line with the Prime Minister’s commitment to the Kashmiris, the ForeignMinister’s letter is part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts tosensitize the international community to the plight of innocent Kashmiris,incarcerated for more than seven weeks now and bearing the brunt of Indianatrocities for the last seven decades.
Indian aggression and hegemonic actions in Occupied Kashmir are a threat toregional peace and stability and hold hostage peace and development onSouth Asia. Pakistan will continue to extend political, moral anddiplomatic support to the Kashmiris’ struggle for the realization of thelegitimate right of self-determination, enshrined in numerous UN SecurityCouncil resolutions for an expedited resolution of the Jammu and Kashmirdispute, pending resolution for more than seven decades due to Indianintransigence.
