Indian Military gets the new Chief of Defence Staff for the first time in history

New Delhi: Indian Military gets the new Chief of Defence Staff for thefirst time in history.

Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), India’s one-point military officer to helpthe Central government deal with defence affairs, will be a Four-Starofficer. The position has been created under the Ministry of Defence andwill head the Department of Military Affairs.

All the integrated tri-services defence commands will be under the Chief ofDefence Staff.

The position of CDS was recommended by the Kargil Review Committee formedin the aftermath of the 1999 war with Pakistan and the Naresh ChandraCommittee.

Created with the aim of ensuring better synchronisation and understandingbetween the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, the CDS willalso ensure optimum utilisation of the defence budget.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on August 15, 2019, announced the creationof CDS following which a committee under National Security Advisor AjitDoval was formed which defined the role and powers of the position.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday (December 24, 2019) approved the committee’sreport following which the announced related to CDS was made.
