ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Tuesday rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s reference seeking to deseat its disgruntled MNA Ayesha Gulalai.
The ECP, while dismissing the reference submitted by PTI chairman Imran Khan, retained the National Assembly membership of Ayesha Gulalai.
Earlier this year, Gulalai parted ways with PTI after leveling allegations of sexual harassment against Imran Khan.
Khan in his reference claimed that Gulalai had violated party laws and should be deseated as she had abstained from voting for the PTI’s chosen candidate, Sheikh Rasheed, for the office of prime minister after the ouster of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif.
The party had sent a show-cause notice to Gulalai. Imran Khan had said that it’s the party’s discretion to take action against any member.
A five member ECP bench under Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Raza Khan issued the split 3-2 judgement in the case.
Meanwhile, speaking to media persons, Gulalai lashed out at Imran Khan, saying that the PIT chief threatens institutions. “Imran Khan has always promoted anarchy. Threatening and abusing judges is his way,” she claimed.
