ISLAMABAD – Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra, who has receivedimmense criticism for a tweet supporting war, retains the right to speak inher personal capacity on issues concerning her, according to a UNspokesperson.
In answer to a question about Chopra, Stephane Dujarric, the spokespersonfor Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said, “Unicef Goodwill Ambassadorsspeak in their personal capacity, they retain the right to speak aboutissues that interest or concern them,” reported Khaleej Times.
“Their personal views or actions do not necessarily reflect those ofUnicef,” he added.
But, he said, “When they speak on behalf of the Unicef, we expect them toadhere to Unicef’s evidence-based impartial positions.”
Regarding their role, he went on to say: “The Unicef Goodwill Ambassadorsare prominent individuals who have agreed to generously volunteer theirtime and their public profile to promote children’s rights.”
Priyanka Chopra has been under fire ever since she tweeted on February 26,a statement, “Jai Hind #IndianArmedForces,” followed by emojis of theIndian flag.
The 37-year-old’s controversial comments have sparked a fierce backlash.Several online petitions have been launched to strip Chopra of her UNAmbassadorship, gaining thousands of signatures immediately.
