KABUL – Taliban have overrun police checkpoint in the Dawlatabad districtof western Faryab province, a police official acknowledged on Friday.
Col. Niamatullah Toofan, the district police chief, told Pajhwok AfghanNews two policemen were killed and three others, including a woman, woundedin the militant assault.
Dozens of fighters stormed the police check-post late on Thursday and theensuing gunbattle continued until midnight. One policeman and a publicuprising member were killed.
He said the police checkpoint was seized by the attackers, who also injuredtwo security personnel. Another source, meanwhile, claimed a woman was alsowounded in the fire exchange.
A provincial council member hailing from the area, Abdul Ahad El-Baik, saidthe checkpoint fell because of Taliban’s increasing pressure and theclosure of the road between the district and the provincial capital.
After the attack, he said, warplanes struck Taliban positions. At themoment, the public representatives said, only the district centre and fivevillages were under government control.
