TEHRAN – Iranian women fulfilled their dream after they were finallyallowed inside Azadi football stadium in Tehran on June 20, after 39 years.This is the first time since 1979 Iranian women were allowed to watchfootball in the same stadium as men.
Iranians, including women, were welcomed by the Azadi stadium in Tehran towatch the live screening of the group stage match between Iran and Spainwhich was held on June 20 (Wednesday).
However, it was not easy for them to enter into the stadium. It took about3 hours before the game was supposed to start as it was announced by theauthorities that live screening was canceled due to some difficulties.
But it did not stop Iranian women, men and children. They rushed into thestadium which led to a standoff with the police. Moreover, InteriorMinister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli gave special orders after which the fanswere allowed to enter in the stadium before the kick off.
Iranian women took selfies and photos inside the Azadi stadium which laterbecame viral on social media. Iranian national football team also tweeted aphoto of a young woman in the stands holding the national flag.
Spain football team’s captain Sergio Ramos also tweeted about thehistorical moment after winning the match against Iran.
