Water availability per person in Pakistan alarmingly reduced

ISLAMABAD: (APP) Speakers urged to increase storage capacity of water reservoirs in the country as its availability has decreased to 1032 cubic meter per person.

These views were shared by speakers at a seminar `The International Water Day and Our Social Responsibilities’ organized here on Wednesday at National Council for Social Welfare (NCSW) to mark World Water Day, a press release said.

“Life cannot exist without water and it is hard time to create awareness among people to preserve water. Our economy cannot make progress without constructing new water reservoirs,” speakers said.

Chairman, Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), Dr Muhammad Ashraf, addressing the seminar as chief guest said in 1947 the availability of water was 8182 cubic meter per person which had now decreased upto 1032 cubic meter.

“The rapid vast decrease is an alarming situation. We have to increase the storage capacity of water reservoirs at public and private level”, he said.

He said without meeting the challenges of water scarcity, our economy could not be improved as well as yields of crops.

But unfortunately, people were less aware about efficient use of water.

Chairman NCSW Dr Nadeem Ashraf said, future of Pakistan was related with construction of new water reservoirs.

He said the incumbent government was taking various steps to preserve water and to generate cheep electricity.

Besides other speakers Syed Naseer Gillani, Chief Water Planning Commission, Syed Gulzar Hussain, Joint Secretary Inter Provincial Coordination Division, Prof Saeed Akbar, Department Environment Sociology, International Islamic University Islamabad, and Ajaz Ahmed Managing Director Partners in Sustainable Development also spoke on the occasion.
