Fake Colonel in uniform arrested while entering Indian Army headquarters

NEW DELHI – A man, seeking to pass himself of as a Lt Colonel, tried toenter the headquarters of the Indian army, the Sena Bhawan, along with hiswife, his wife’s brother, and a driver but was caught, police said. Allfour are being questioned.

The accused, identified as Amit Sharma from Ghaziabad, wearing a armyuniform with the name Abhimanyu Sharma, showed an entry pass from the PrimeMinister’s office to the security guard at the entrance of Sena Bhawan at5pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Madhur Verma.

The guard however got suspicious and asked few more questions. When henoticed uneasiness in the “Lt Col”, the guard immediately informed hisseniors.

The four were detained and preliminary questioning revealed that theaccused had earlier entered the Ministry of External Affairs and othergovernment offices with fake identity cards. Later on, after verificationby army officials, Sharma, his wife and other two accompanying persons weredetained.

“Prima facie, it appears that accused persons used to cheat innocentunemployed youth by promising them to get them a job in the army,” thepolice officer said.

Sandeep Kumar told police that he had given Rs250,000 (Dh13,359) to Sharmafor a job in the Indian Army.

“Further interrogation is in progress and necessary legal action is beingtaken,” said Verma.
