Pakistan – Iran vow to strengthen bilateral ties

NEW YORK – Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in a meeting with Iranian President Muhammad Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York also discussed strengthening of relations between the two countries, besides focusing on the issue of regional peace and security.

The Prime Minister said while pursuing a policy of peaceful neighbourhood, Pakistan is committed to strengthen relations with Iran.

President Rouhani, reaffirming Iran’s firm commitment to strengthen ties with Pakistan, emphasized that the two countries should work together closely in deepening mutual cooperation in the areas of border management, trade, and investment.

The two leaders also exchanged views about efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

PAKISTAN AND SRI LANKA

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have also agreed to cooperate at all multilateral forums in the spirit of neighborhood and longstanding relationships.

This was agreed at a meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on the sidelines of UNGA session in New York.

Sri Lankan President stressed on the need for enhancement in trade and economic relations between the two countries. It was agreed that there is a large potential for expansion in defence cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said we believe that Sri Lanka, being an important member of SAARC, can play a significant role in the region.

He said Pakistan wants to further expand trade and economic cooperation with Sri Lanka.
