ISLAMABAD – The Indian cricket board has decided to send four extra players(Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini) for the WorldCup. Few other teams including Sri Lanka too will have reserve players. However, these extra players will not be able to share dressing room duringthe matches.
Not only that, the expenses of the extra players will be born by therespective Board Member.Explaining exclusively the ICC policy on this, Claire Furlong, the ICC’sGeneral Manager – Strategic Communications, says,Every competing nation can have a squad of 23.
That 23 has to have 15 named players (no more) The remainder will be madeup of team management / doctors / physios / media officer A team can useone or more of the remaining 8 squad places for a player who is not part ofthe 15 (so a travelling reserve if you like) If they take this route withinthe 23, the non-named player can be part of all activity as per a squadmember and is paid for by the ICC.
If they chose to bring ‘extra’ players outside of the 23 that is fine, butthey are not paid for or accredited as the squad, it is at the Member’s owndiscretionIf this is the case the ICC can facilitate access to training etc. but thatplayer (outside of the 23) will have no access to dressing rooms / teamtransport etc. for which you need squad accreditation That 15 can changewithout permission up until 22 MayAny changes to the 15 after 23 May has to have the approval of the EventTechnical Committee (not yet named, will be named closer to the event)”.
The above policy also answers Team India head coach Ravi Shastri, who hadpreferred a 16-member squad for the World Cup.
