LAHORE: Panic can be observed in the ranks of the Sharif family as the time for the Panama case verdict closes on.
Just two hours before the Supreme Court of Pakistan announces a historic verdict in the Panamagte case, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz has said she’s “amazed and humbled” by the “overwhelming support” for the prime minister.
“Whatever the verdict, am amazed and humbled to see the overwhelming support for Nawaz Sharif. For a leader, that’s the most prized possession,” the premier’s daughter tweeted.
The Panama Papers investigation exposed offshore companies linked to more than 140 politicians in more than 50 countries – including 14 current or former world leaders in April 2016. The Papers also revealed names of over 200 Pakistanis, including PM Nawaz Sharif’s children, who owned offshore companies in international tax havens.
In the wake of the Panama Papers revelation, a slew of petitions were filed in the apex court by the opposition, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to seek Nawaz’s disqualification on the basis of his alleged involvement in corruption.
The superior judiciary has adjudicated a number of cases related to the Sharif family. The family has been successful in getting relief in many matters.
