ISLAMABAD – Complete shutdown will be observed in Gaw Kadal, Basant Bagh,Kani-Kadal, Chota-Bazaar, Budshah Chowk and others areas of Srinagar,tomorrow, to mark the anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre.According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), call for the shutdown has beengiven by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Gilani,Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.More than 50 innocent people were killed in Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on21st January in 1990 when Indian forces had resorted to indiscriminatefiring on peaceful demonstrators who were protesting against themolestation of several women by the troops on the previous night.The JRL in a statement issued in Srinagar termed the massacres carried outby Indian troops at Gaw Kadal, Handwara and Kupwara in the month of Januaryin 1990s as a reminder of Indian illegal occupation and oppression in theoccupied territory. It said that congregational prayers would also be heldat Gaw Kadal, tomorrow.The statement said that united India during its struggle for freedom fromBritain had witnessed only one Jalianwala Bagh massacre but the Kashmiripeople have witnessed dozens of such incidents carried out by the Indianforces since 1990 and this slaughter was still going on unabated.Meanwhile, Hurriyat leaders and different organizations have paid glowingtributes to the martyrs of Gaw Kadal massacre on the eve of theiranniversary and said that the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs will not gowaste.Hurriyat leaders, Chairman of Tehreek-e-Muzahamat, Bilal Siddiqi, illegallydetained Chairman of IslamiTanzeem-e-Azadi, Abdul Samad Inqilabi, Chairman of Jammu and KashmirSalvation Movement, Zafar Akbar Butt also paid lowing tributes to themartyrs of Gaw Dadal and urged the people of Kashmir to show commitmentand remain steadfastness in the liberation struggle.
