Indian Air Force activated 8 Airfields along border

NEW DELHI – Indian Air Force activated a crucial advanced landing groundon Wednesday.

This is the eighth advanced landing ground to have been revived to operatefighter jets and transport aircraft near the China border in the remotelylocated Vijaynagar area.

Vijaynagar Advanced Landing Ground is situated in Arunachal’s Changlangdistrict. The revamped runway was inaugurated on Wednesday morning by AirOfficer Commanding in Chief (AOC-in-C) Eastern Air Command, R.D. Mathur.

“The resurfaced ground will assist in the effective management of India’sborder with Myanmar and facilitate the launch of joint operations by theIndian Army and Indian Air Force,” an official said.

India has already activated seven decades-old advanced landing grounds nearthe China border, and all of them have been capable of handling thecountry’s larger transport aircraft like C-130J and fighter jet-likeSu-30MKI.

​The Indian Air Force also landed a C-17 Globemasterlinkonthese activated, advanced landing grounds.

India started the process of reconstructing eight Advanced Landing Groundsalong the border with China in 2009. The work to resurface the Vijaynagarairfield was delayed due to the unavailability of road connectivity.

The government had also established road connectivity to the areasurrounding Vijayanagar before commencing the work on the airfield.

The IAF has identified 24 disused airfieldslinkthat canbe implemented for other purposes such as the deployment of long-rangeradars, weapon storage, the dispersal of strategic assets duringoperations, emergency recovery strips, AD weapons deployment, andhelicopter operations.
