PM Imran Khan vow to make Thar Coal project successful

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan says federal government will extendevery possible assistance to make Thar Coal project successful, which is aventure of national interest.

He gave this assurance, while responding to requests of various companiesseeking Federal Government’s help regarding transportation, provision ofwater, and establishment of power transmission line, at a high-levelmeeting in Islamabad today about reserves of Thar Coal and its utilization.

The Prime Minister said that Thar Coal was an important asset of thecountry, which has been neglecting in the past. He said it will be helpfulin meeting country’s energy needs by utilizing coal of Thar.

Imran Khan was briefed about various projects of public welfare, includinghealth, education, skill development of local people, and afforestation inThar, being completed under Thar Foundation.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company also about briefed the prime minister aboutmining in Thar.

He was apprised that first phase of Block-II of Thar Coal has beencompleted, while work on second phase is underway. Power plants are beingsetup to fulfill energy requirements of the country by utilizing Thar coalin various phases. Imran Khan was briefed that 5,000 megawatt ofelectricity can be produced from Block-II by 2025 for next fifty years.

He was informed that Thar coal is the seventh largest reserves in theworld, which can be used for producing 100,000 megawatt of electricity fornext two centuries. Coal reserves in Thar are estimated as 175 billiontons, which is equal to 50 billion barrels of oil, and 2,000 trillion cubicof gas.
