In a Major Diplomatic success, Pakistan elected as Head of top UN Conference

ISLAMABAD: In another major achievement on diplomatic front, Pakistan hasbeen elected as head of the annual meeting of the UN convention on CertainConventional Weapons (CCW).

In a statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said thatPakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nation in Geneva,Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, has been elected as the chairperson of the annualmeeting of states parties to the CCW.

He said, “Pakistan’s unanimous election reflects recognition by theinternational community of the country’s longstanding contribution topromote international security through arms control instruments.”

Dr. Faisal said that it was also an endorsement of Pakistan’s strongcredentials in multilateral diplomacy.

He said, “The CCW represents an important arms control framework thatenvisages prohibitions and restrictions on certain conventional weaponsthat can cause unnecessary suffering to combatants or affect civiliansindiscriminately.”

The convention and its five Protocols strike a prudent balance betweenhumanitarian concerns and legitimate military utility of certain categoriesof conventional weapons, the statement said and added that the statesparties meet annually to review the implementation of the convention, aswell as to explore the possibility of developing additional Protocols onnew weapon systems of concern.

The spokesperson maintained that this year’s annual meeting will addressseveral important issues including the role of autonomous weapons and thefinancial sustainability of the convention.
