NEW YORK – Pakistan gets a big foreign policy and diplomatic success at theUnited Nations General Assembly, it has been revealed.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Wednesday adopted by consensusa resolution, sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines, on promotinginterreligious and intercultural dialogue.
Speaking to APP after the 193-member Assembly’s action, Pakistan’s UNAmbassador Maleeha Lodhi said the resolution, which this year garnered arecord 49 co-sponsors, had evolved into a “significant document” to pavethe way for genuine and constructive dialogue across the world’s culturaland religious dialogue.
Under it’s terms, the UNGA reaffirmed the solemn commitment of all statesto fulfill their obligations to promote universal respect for andprotection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms, in accordance withthe United Nations Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“At a time when multilateralism is under stress and many parts of the worldare witnessing the rise of Islamophobia and spread of xenophobia, thisresolution helps to reaffirm the need for dialogue and places the emphasison the bonds that unite us,” Ambassador Lodhi said.
“In a fraught and uncertain world,” the Pakistani envoy said, “thisresolution has special significance as it promotes interreligious andintercultural dialogue and encourages those working for peace and betterunderstanding among people.”
Under the resolution, the states were invited to promote reconciliation tohelp ensure durable peace and sustained development, including throughreconciliatory measures and acts of service.
