Transgender rights in Pakistan: CJP announces the historic step

*ISLAMABAD – In an initiative to mainstream the transgender community,Chief Justice of Pakistan has announced the historic decision.*

*He announced on Wednesday that two transgender persons will be givenemployment in the Supreme Court.*

During the hearing of a case pertaining to the rights of transgendercommunity, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar said that the judiciary wants toincorporate transgender people into the nation as an accepted and ordinaryperson.

“It is our first priority to give transgender community their due rights,”the top judge stated lamenting that transgender are ridiculed in oursociety.

A day earlier, Lahore High Court also wrote to Punjab government andSecretary Health to construct separate wards for transgender in hospitals.

The high court observed that this move would cater the privacy oftransgender.

Previously, the apex court had granted transgender people the right to voteand the Chief Justice has vowed that more social rights will be given tothem.

In the light of SC’s decision, the National Database and RegistrationAuthority (NADRA) issued transgenders computerized national identity cards(CNIC) and the oppressed community cast their votes for the first time inJuly 25 elections.

The Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen), an independent think-tank, alsoappointed around 25 transgender persons to work for the organization aselection observers.
