Indian agencies investigating possible spying ring inside IAF

NEW DELHI – The Delhi Police’s special cell unit on Thursday arrested anIndian Air Force (IAF) officer on charges of espionage and passing onclassified information to Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-ServicesIntelligence (ISI).

Group Captain Arun Marwaha was detained by the IAF counter-intelligencewing on January 31. Police are iinvestigating if many others are involvedin this ring.

“During routine counter intelligence surveillance carried out by the IAF’sCentral Security and Investigation Team it was discovered that an officerwas indulging in certain unwanted activities through unauthorizedelectronic devices, which is against existing orders,” said a policeofficial. The IAF handed him over to the Police.

A senior special cell official on Thursday said the officer, posted at theIAF headquarters in Delhi, has been charged under the Official Secrets Act.His phone and laptop have been confiscated. He was produced before amagistrate in the Patiala House Courts Complex, who sent him in five dayspolice custody.

“The IAF officer befriended the ISI agents on Facebook – they had fakeprofiles as women – a few months ago and they started chatting regularly onWhatsApp. They allegedly even exchanged intimate messages and pictures,”said the police official.

He started passing on sensitive defence information to a ”woman” viaWhatsApp and Facebook, sources said.
