ISLAMABAD – Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan confirmed on Wednesday thatthere was no other option than to increase the power tariff.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said thegovernment was finalising the increase in the price of electricity.
“There will be an increase in the price of electricity in stages over thenext year and a half,” he elaborated.
The lawmaker said the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA)recommended an increase in the price of electricity by Rs2 per unit,however, hastened to add that approving such recommendation would not beaccepted by the public.
Ayub’s announcement came a day after he vowed to put an end to the circulardebt by December 2020.
‘Nepra had recommended an increase of Rs3.84 in per unit price ofelectricity,’ he had said at a press briefing.
