Frustration over Taliban peace deal, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani cancels US visit

KABUL – After having openly shown Frustration over peace deal with AfghanTaliban, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani cancels US visit, Afghan media hasreported citing government sources.

Sources familiar with President Ghani’s scheduled trip to Washington DC saythat it has been postponed for now.

Earlier in the day, the sources said that President Ghani will travel toWashington DC on Saturday with a 13-member delegation to meet withPresident Trump on Monday.

Mr. Ghani’s trip to Washington will come after Kabul has shown frustrationabout the US-Taliban deal which is ‘agreed in principle’.

His trip will also come as Americans are still pushing for intra-Afghannegotiations to happen before the Sept 28th presidential elections.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, President Ghani said in a statement that peace withthe Taliban is “meaningless”. He expressed the remarks hours after apowerful car bombing by the Taliban in the nation’s capital, Kabul, killedat least ten civilians.
