COAS General Bajwa responds to attack on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal

RAWALPINDI – Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa has responded over theattack on Federal Minister for Interior Ahsan Iqbal.

He was attacked in Punjab’s Narowal town on Sunday evening. COAS hasstrongly condemned the attack on the Interior Minister.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader was attacked during theparty’s corner meeting in Qasba Kanjrod area of the town.

The incident took place when Iqbal was leaving the meeting, being held atMPA Rana Manan’s residence. Police said the minister received two bulletsto his arm.

The attacker has been identified as 21-year-old Abid Hussain, who has beenshifted to an undisclosed location.

Iqbal was taken to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, where he isbeing treated at the operation theatre.

State Minister for Interior Tallal Chaudry told a private TV channel thatIqbal was out of danger. The arrested suspect was between 20-22 years old,he said, adding that he was being interrogated.

“Ahsan Iqbal was targeted and shot in the arm,” Asim Khan, a special aideto the politician, told AFP. “He is out of danger and being taken to amedical facility in Lahore. The attacker has been arrested.”

Malik Ahmed Khan, a spokesman for the Punjab government, told AFP Iqbal hadbeen attending the meeting in his constituency in Narowal district when hewas shot in the right arm.

“The attacker was about to fire a second shot when police and people in themeeting overpowered him,” Khan said, adding that Iqbal was undergoingsurgery and confirming his life was not in danger.
