UNITED NATIONS: US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley saidTuesday that Washington would seek an emergency meeting of the SecurityCouncil on the protests in Iran.
“The UN must speak out in the days ahead, we will be calling for anemergency session,” she said. “The people of Iran are crying out forfreedom.”
Haley praised the courage of Iranian demonstrators and said protests acrossthe country were spontaneous, not driven by outside forces.
After she read out social media posts written by Iranians in support of theprotests, Haley dismissed Iranian leaders’ contention that the protestswere designed by Iran’s enemies.
“We all know that’s complete nonsense,” she said. “The demonstrations arecompletely spontaneous. They are virtually in every city in Iran. This isthe precise picture of a long oppressed peoples rising up against theirdictators.”
Iranians have entered a sixth day of protests as the death toll rises to atleast 22. More than 450 people have been arrested so far and Iran’sRevolutionary Court in Tehran has stated that they will sentence anyone whodemonstrates from today as enemies of the state.
