National Road Safety plan to be formulated in 30 days

ISLAMABAD: (APP) Federal Ombudsman, in a bid to resolve the road safety issues, has asked Ministry of Communication to set up National Steering Committee for formulation of National Road Safety for Highways & Motorways of Pakistan by including all stakeholders and provincial governments and to submit National Road Safety Plan in 30 days.

According to Radio Pakistan, this decision was taken at a high level meeting at Federal Ombudsman secretariat under the chair of Hafiz Ahsan Ahmed Khokhar, (Senior Advisor) Grievance Commissioner for Overseas Pakistanis to Federal Ombudsman.

Hafiz Ahsan Ahmed Khokhar asked Motorway Police to immediately make Rules for traffic safety which has not been done since promulgation of NSA 2000.

The senior adviser further directed that suggestion for improvement be also suggested for amendments in Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1969.

He said special attention should be given to infrastructure and road         safety issues by including best practices of road safety of world while drafting National Road Safety Plan for Pakistan roads which resultantly will safe life of millions of Pakistanis.

He disclosed that due to lack of Road Safety Plan and awareness and in presence of out-dated traffic laws around 55,000 Pakistanis died in road accidents and thousands injured, so special attention should be given by federal and provincial governments.

He directed the participants to take immediate steps on directions of federal ombudsman secretariat and to submit National Road Safety Plan for highways & Motorways before the next meeting which will be held in first week of June 2016.
