ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday strongly reaffirmed its unwavering supportfor China on the Taiwan question, emphasising adherence to the One-Chinaprinciple amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait following Beijing’srecent large-scale military exercises. Foreign Office Spokesperson TahirHussain Andrabi, responding to media queries, described the two nations asiron-clad friends and all-weather strategic cooperative partners,underscoring Islamabad’s consistent backing on matters vital to China’ssovereignty.
The statement highlights Pakistan’s long-standing position that Taiwan isan inalienable part of China’s territory, a policy rooted in decades ofdiplomatic relations established in 1951. This reaffirmation comes as Chinaconcluded its “Justice Mission 2025” drills, which involved firing dozensof rockets and deploying numerous warships and aircraft to simulateblockade operations around the island.
Andrabi explicitly stated that Pakistan would continue to regard Taiwan asinseparable from China, opposing any moves toward independence or externalinterference. This aligns with the United Nations General AssemblyResolution 2758 of 1971, which recognised the People’s Republic of China asthe sole legitimate representative of China, a resolution Pakistan hasconsistently upheld in international forums.
The drills, announced by China’s Eastern Theater Command, were described byBeijing as a necessary response to separatist activities and foreignprovocations, particularly following a major United States arms sale toTaiwan valued at over eleven billion dollars. The exercises tested jointoperations capabilities, including sea-air patrols and strikes on maritimetargets, drawing international concern over regional stability.
Pakistan’s position reinforces the depth of the China-Pakistan EconomicCorridor and broader strategic ties, which include mutual support on coreinterests such as Kashmir for Pakistan and Taiwan for China. Analysts notethat this solidarity has remained steadfast through various geopoliticalshifts, contributing to bilateral cooperation in defence, economy, andinfrastructure development.
In contrast, the United States urged restraint, stating that China’smilitary activities unnecessarily escalated tensions and calling fordialogue to maintain peace across the strait. Several Western allies,including Australia, Japan, and the European Union, echoed concerns aboutunilateral changes to the status quo, while Taiwan condemned the drills asprovocative threats to its security.
Beijing maintains that Taiwan is a domestic issue and has not renounced theuse of force for reunification, viewing the island’s democratically electedgovernment as separatist. The recent exercises marked an expansion in scopecompared to previous ones, incorporating live-fire elements closer toTaiwanese ports and involving coordinated forces from multiple branches.
