Kartarpur Corridor to help reduce distances between people of Pakistan, India: PIBC

LAHORE: The Pak-India Business Council (PIBC) said the newly-inaugurated Kartarpur Corridor would help reduce distances between the people of Pakistan and India.

Talking to APP, PIBC Chairman Noor Muhammad Kasuri said corridors strengthened relations among countries. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor had brought the two neighbouring countries of Pakistan and China further closer, Suez Canal trade route reduced distances between Egypt and the Europe while the Grand Trunk (GT) Road had connected Calcutta with Almata.

“We can increase mutual trade with India and can get benefit of deferred payment or credit line in business,” he added.

He said India was a market of 1.34 billion people and Pakistan could compete other countries by enhancing its exports to the neighbour. More new corridors such as Gandda-Singh border point should be opened on about 1,200-kilometre long border between the two countries, he added.

He said trust deficits between the two neighbours could be bridged by opening more corridors. The Kartarpur Corridor would help build a good image of Pakistan in the world, he added.

He said Pakistan had potential to earn around $200 billion foreign exchange form tourism, textile, marble, cement

and other industries. Transit trade with Afghanistan and the East Asian countries could also generate revenue for Pakistan if the Kartarpur Corridor was opened for trade, he added.

Kasuri said disputes between the two countries could only be resolved through dialogue.

He said the Pak-India Business Council had formulated a three-year strategy to forge better relations between the people of the neighbouring countries in which exchange of delegations of politicians, parliamentarians and culture would play an important role.

He said the Council was planning to organise business exhibitions in the two countries under which India show

would be held in Islamabad and Pakistan show would be held in New Delhi.

“People-to-people contacts also build trust among nations and severity of disputes lessens through the

process,” he added.
