SRINAGAR – In Occupied Kashmir, the authorities imposed restrictions inSrinagar and parts of south Kashmir, today, to prevent people from stagingdemonstrations against the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami of the territory by theIndian government and raids on the residences of Hurriyat leaders byIndia’s National Investigation Agency.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Joint Resistance Leadershipcomprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malikhad called for peaceful demonstrations after Juma prayers, today. The JRLin a statement in Srinagar condemning the ban on the Jamaat said that NewDelhi’s repressive measures against the Kashmiris had become the order ofthe day.
The occupation authorities deployed Indian troops and police personnel instrength in Srinagar, Islamabad and Bijbehara to prevent thedemonstrations. Indian forces’ personnel locked down Jamia Masjid Srinagarand disallowed people to offer Juma prayers.
The authorities placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest whileMuhammad Yasin Malik and Mukhtar Waza are already under illegal detention.
However, despite restrictions, a large number of Hurriyat leaders andactivists staged a demonstration at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. They shoutedanti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Indian Ministry of Home Affairs in a notification issued yesterday bannedthe Jamaat-e-Islami on the charges of supporting the ongoing liberationstruggle and pro-freedom groups fighting for this purpose.
Indian police and troops continued their crackdown against the Jamaatleaders and activists in South Kashmir arresting dozens of them.
