US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani facetheir last chance today for a historic meeting as European leaders raced toarrange talks aimed at defusing soaring tensions.
A meeting between the arch-adversaries would be historic but also comeunder a political cloud, with Trump’s Democratic rivals on Tuesdayannouncing an impeachment inquiry against him.
With world leaders gathered in New York for the annual UN General Assembly,French President Emmanuel Macron made a fresh push for Mr Trump to meet MrRouhani.
Escorting a smiling Mr Rouhani to a meeting with British Prime MinisterBoris Johnson, Mr Macron said that time was running short.

“If he leaves the country without meeting with President Trump, honestlythis is a lost opportunity because he will not come back in a few months,”Mr Macron said.
“And President Trump will not go to Tehran, so they have to meet now,” hesaid, as Mr Johnson voiced agreement.
Mr Macron has spearheaded efforts to arrange a historic summit, sellingTrump on the idea last month as he hopes to salvage a 2015 denuclearizationaccord with Iran. – APP/AFP
