Pakistan and Iran on track to forging military diplomacy

TEHRAN – (IRNA) Iranian and Pakistani top military officials’ meetings haveincreased noticeably over the recent years that the 2nd visit of Pakistan’sChief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa to Iran is indicative ofthe two neighboring countries’ determination towards boosting as well aspromoting military diplomacy.

The current visit of Pakistan’s senior military official to the IslamicRepublic of Iran shows the plot of regional and transregional states forcreating division between two friendly and brotherly countries has been invain.

This is the second official visit of General Bajwa to Iran. Heading ahigh-ranking military delegation, he paid a visit to the capital city ofTehran in November 2017 and met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani andIran’s top commanders as well as Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif.

General Bajwa held talks with President Rouhani, Zarif, Chief of Staff ofthe Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, ArmyCommander Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi along with Secretary of theSupreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

In an interview with IRNA, the former successor to the Pakistani Air Forcecommander Qaiser Hussain said that General Bajwa has prioritized reducingregional tensions, particularly combating sectarianism.

The General’s visit to Iran could bolster the two sides’ convergence andpave the way for establishing relations between Arab states and theirneighboring countries, he added.

An Expert on the Middle East and Pakistan Security Kamran Yousuf describedthe visit of General Bajwa to Iran as the continuation of the earlier jointcooperation on defense as well as security areas.

He went on to say that the regional situation of Afghanistan and Daesh (theISIS) that are considered as a threat for both Iran and Pakistan has beenon the agenda of the top commanders’ talk.

The Pakistani expert on Afghanistan and the Taliban issues Muhammad TaherKhan said that the security of borders, fighting extremism, stopping crossborder trespassing, and combating smuggling, especially reviewing thesituation in Afghanistan, have been the main focus of the General’s visitto Tehran.

The Pakistani Professor Rizwana Abbasi pointed out that Tehran andIslamabad seek to resolve the issue of Afghanistan by resorting todiplomacy as well as negotiations not through military moves.
